Sudoku Rules - How to play this simple but intriguing game

3rd March 2006

Learning to play sudoku is simple. There is only one basic rule. Get ready, here it is: Every column, every row, and every box in the puzzle must contain each number from 1 to 9. That’s it. It is so simple even I can understand it.

Here’s a bit more information to get you started:

There are nine columns and nine rows in the puzzle grid. These 81 squares are further divided into nine 3×3 boxes.

Each new puzzle will come with a few numbers already in place. You will use these as clues, or givens, to begin to solve the puzzle.

Arithmetic is not needed when you are working with the numbers. They are given units. You could use other things like pictures, or colored pebbles, or letters, but numbers are easier.

Don’t guess, and don’t use trial and error too much when you are working on the puzzle. The addictive beauty of the game is that it can be solved by using logic.
